New MPs Lisa Smart and Tom Morrison have cautiously welcomed the Government’s positive response to their request for funding to repair the damaged buildings at Stepping Hill Hospital.

The Government’s announcement committed them to spending on the hospital buildings, but gave no details of the amount or timeline for funding.

Tom Morrison MP said: “This is undoubtedly a positive step, and after years of being stonewalled by the previous Government, it is a refreshing change to get a positive response.

“However, we still need more information from the Government on whether it is sufficient to deal with the extremely pressing problems that there are at Stepping Hill.”

Repairs at Stepping Hill are currently estimated to cost at least £50 million, with the a backlog of over £11 billion across the country.

Lisa Smart MP added: “There are emergency repairs needed just to stop the crumbling buildings, which have repeatedly meant that patients been prevented from getting urgent care.

“But there is a critical need to ensure that the whole hospital is rebuilt to the standard required – which is why I have been campaigning for a new, additional site in the centre of Stockport; the most effective way to create a stable long-term future for the hospital. We need to know what funding is being made available, when, and what for. We look forward to receiving these answers.”
