Marple – a glorious heritage
Marple's canal heritage makes it one of a kind; unique in England, and one of the best examples of industrial waterways in the UK. Marple Aqueduct is the highest canal aqueduct in England and the highest masonry-arch aqueduct in Britain. The 16-lock flight at Marple is a spectacular sight, and one of the steepest flights in Britain. The history of Samuel Oldknow and his legacy in Mellor and Marple is one we can all be proud of.
A World Heritage Site in Marple
Marple Locks, Marple Aqueduct and Marple Viaduct are a unique set of structures in a beautiful setting unrivalled across the UK. Do you agree that they should be put forward for World Heritage Status?
Making the case in Parliament
In November, Member of Parliament Lisa Smart spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on funding for the Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canals, where she made the case for the lock flight and aqueduct to be recognised as a World Heritage site.
