Mark Hunter steps down as leader of Stockport Council

Following the announcement that Councillor Mark Hunter is stepping down as leader of Stockport Council, Lisa Smart MP welcomed his immense contribution to Stockport and Cheadle over the years.
She said: ”Mark’s record of service for the people of Stockport is second to none. I am proud to call him a friend, and to have benefited from working with him and learning from him – he has always been incredibly generous with his advice and wisdom.
”He has always had very clear sense of what is right, and has always led from that place, whether that has been as leader of Stockport Council, or as the MP for Cheadle.
”He was a terrific MP for Cheadle, following in Patsy Calton’s formidable footsteps. He worked incredibly hard for the area in his 10 years as an MP, both as a constituency MP and in his national role as Transport Spokesman and Deputy Chief Whip for the party.
”His commitment to Stockport has been clear. On returning to lead Stockport Council, he has been an inspirational driver of the regeneration of Stockport, with massive investment in improving the town centre, saving Stockport Library, and delivering the new transport interchange.
”Cheadle and Stockport have been lucky to have such a committed and strong servant, and I am incredibly grateful for everything that he has achieved as leader, councillor and MP. Even more so, I am proud of and grateful to him as a friend and a colleague.”
