Liberal Democrats continue fight for Metrolink to Stockport

Leader of Stockport Council, Cllr Mark Hunter, has asked for Andy Burnham to follow through on his long-term pledge to back Metrolink in Stockport. This is following the publication of a GMCA map showing the new train station for Cheadle and crucially, Stockport as a potential tram station on the future transport network, after years of the Stockport Liberal Democrats lobbying for the extension.

Cllr Hunter said: “Our campaign for a new station at Cheadle and the urgent need to bring Metrolink to Stockport are well known and well supported. On Metrolink, the infrastructure is there, the business case is there and most importantly the people of Stockport want it here.”

Yet despite this, Cllr Hunter was sceptical of another potential false dawn, with Metrolink promised by Andy Burnham long ago.

“With all due respect, we have now heard this so many times, people are understandably asking- what is holding him back?  He has the power and authority to green light the scheme and give the go ahead.  May I respectfully remind him that we in Stockport have waited long enough, and our patience is running out.”

Stockport has recently finished its new Transport Interchange as part of its £1 billion regeneration in the town centre, all construction and renovation has been completed with Metrolink in mind, meaning as soon as the Manchester Mayor gives the green light, work can begin as soon as possible.
