£56 million repair backlog for Stockport NHS

The latest NHS data has emphasized the crisis in Stepping Hill Hospital and across the NHS in the borough, with a total of £59.1million repairs required – of which £23.3 million are high risk or significant risk.
Just days after Health Minister Karin Smyth wrote to MPs Tom Morrison and Lisa Smart to say that the Government ” cannot commit to additional funding at this stage,” the figures lay bare the scale of the problems facing the area.
Lisa Smart MP said: ““It is absolutely scandalous that people here are being treated in hospitals that need millions in repairs. When someone goes to hospital, the very least they should expect is to be treated in a building that is safe.
“While it is clear that the Conservatives have left a legacy of neglect and mismanagement, these repairs must be addressed now. Thousands of people have already signed our petition; and sadly, thousands more have seen the state of Stepping Hill Hospital for themselves.”
Repairs deemed ‘high risk’ needed in Stockport came to a staggering total of £3.26 million – those where a failure to urgently address repairs could lead to serious injury and major disruption to services.
Bosses at Stockport Council have recently invited Secrertary of State for Health Wes Streeting to see the scale of the problems at Stepping Hill Hospital for himself.
Tom Morrison MP added: “The Chancellor has the opportunity to use changes to borrowing rules to free up money to invest in hospitals at the Budget. This is the greatest challenge facing this country, rescuing our NHS. It is one they must rise to, and we will ensure that we hold them to account on it.”
